What Else can a Checkweigher Accomplish?
The first, most basic (and, arguably, the most important) function of any checkweigher is to verify the correct amount of product is in a container. It seems pretty simple – the product runs over the weighing cell and the system triggers a rejection mechanism should the weight of the product fall outside the tolerances set by the operator. That is more or less all a checkweigher needs to do – but it is not all that a checkweigher is capable of doing.
What makes a checkweigher stand out from the crowd, then, apart from the accuracy of its weighing cell? Make no mistake, weighing accuracy takes a lot to maintain, including finding ways to build a frame that filters out vibrations or other environmental disturbances that could interfere with the accuracy of the product weight. Getting the most accurate weight possible is, in many ways, the point of the whole affair – but there’s also what the system can do with that data. What other things can you do with a checkweigher beyond removing over or under-filled products?
Let’s look at the C33 PlusLine series of checkweighers from METTLER TOLEDO, for instance. There’s a lot the C33 can do in order to ensure an accurate weighing of products – product handling variants including sidegrips, starwheels, or guide rails make sure product flow goes smoothly, which is important for accurate weighing. It also helps that ensuring a smooth product throughput helps improve overall performance on the production line. On top of that, the system is designed to be easily maintained: its IP65 rating and an open frame design ensure easy cleaning and consistent performance in wet and dry environments. This is all related to the accuracy and performance of the checkweigher, of course – but here’s where things go above and beyond: there are 200 standard and productivity-enhancing options available to add value to the system and your production line. With all the options available, you can get a checkweighing system customized to meet your specific needs.
What sort of options, you ask? Well, there’s our Feedback Control, for a start. It tracks shifts in the mean weight of a series of products to identify filler drift – and sends adjustments to your filling equipment to correct for the problem should filler drift occur. There’s also options to send shutdown signals to production equipment in the event of a significant problem. The C33 also provides statistical data which can help in analysis of production efficiency, and, of course, connects to ProdX data management software for remote access and insight into the production process.
There’s more, of course – the C33 can be configured to do more than just weigh products. The system is available as a combination system with Safeline Profile metal detectors. This saves space on the production line – and gets products weighed and scanned for metal contamination all in one spot! Seems fairly efficient, don’t you think?
